Who's dominating smart grid security? New report lists 8 leaders
Quick Take: Many utilities feel more comfortable buying from leaders -- from established companies at the forefront of the market. First, they feel market success is (at least partially) correlated with quality. Second, they feel market leaders are more likely to be around five, ten years from now for continued support.
Nowhere is it more important to have a long-term partnership than in cybersecurity. It's not good enough to pick a vendor whose product is strong today. You need a vendor committed to keeping its product ahead of the hackers. As we've recently been learning about credit card security, the bad actors never stop inventing new ways to get around current protections.
Infiniti Research Limited is out with a report listing their choice of the top eight vendors. I've reproduced it below, even though I have some reservations. With only a few exceptions, the report focuses on vendors who have a standalone security product or service. But doesn't this ignore vendors such as ABB, Cisco and Microsoft, who bake security into their designs from the start? Use the Talk Back form at the bottom of the page if you have an opinion. And follow the link if you want information on the full report. - By Jesse Berst
Rapid growth in the number and sophistication of cyber attacks is forcing utilities to implement strong security measures. This, in turn, is driving rapid growth in the global market for smart grid cybersecurity. Infiniti Research Limited projects the market will grow at a compound annual growth rate of just under 30% from 2012 to 2016. During that period, they expect cloud-based solutions to gain share.
In the American, APAC and EMEA regions, Infiniti lists these eight companies as leaders:
1. BAE Systems PLC
2. IBM Corp.
3. Industrial Defender Inc.
4. IOActive Inc.
5. Lockheed Martin Corp.
6. Siemens AG
7. VeriSign Inc.
8. ViaSat Inc.
