This week’s smart grid wins: Projects, new partnerships (and more)

There has been a lot of activity in the smart grid sector this past week or so, and we picked what we hope you will find an interesting selection of project wins, along with new partnerships and more.




Public Utility District #1 of Benton County in Kennewick, Washington has chosen MeterSense, Harris Utilities SmartWorks’ meter data management (MDM) solution. Benton PUD views MeterSense MDM as being the foundation enterprise application that will enable them to integrate their past and future Customer Engagement initiatives. Benton PUD delivers electricity to approximately 50,000 customers. The utility chose MeterSense to allow it to take advantage of the interval data collected by the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) system. MeterSense offers a complex validation, estimation and editing (VEE) function which transforms the large amounts of interval data into valuable business intelligence for Benton PUD. More >>


Silver Spring Networks announced it is entering the next phase of a project to provide a foundational networking platform supporting a new EDP Distribuicao smart grid initiative in Portugal. The project will take place in Batalha and is part of EDP's continued implementation of smart grid technology following. The project will combine advanced distribution automation features to minimize customer interruptions together with consumption and generation-intensive duty-cycle automated meter reading, enabling new customer services and a smarter integration of distributed generation supported by an active distribution system management, all using the same standards-based communications platform.


Silver Spring Networks also announced the successful completion of the initial phase of its smart grid rollout in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil through a partnership with CPFL Energia, Brazil's largest private electricity group. This announcement is the first commercial-scale smart grid deployment in Brazil and establishes the essential foundation for residential metering and distribution automation projects. More >>



Itron announced today that its industry-leading OpenWay(R) smart grid network is now available on a global scale. OpenWay is an advanced IP network that supports multiple smart grid applications and devices over an interoperable, secure, enterprise-class network infrastructure. The network addresses key drivers and business needs of utilities around the globe, from improvement in grid reliability to support for consumer engagement and energy efficiency. Itron's global OpenWay network connects utilities with their customers and grid assets using multiple communication options - RF Mesh, cellular, power line carrier (PLC) - based on localized protocols and standards. Tollgrade Communications and ELO Sistemas Eletrônicos, one of the largest meter manufacturers in Latin America, announced that they have signed an agreement in which ELO will offer and sell Tollgrade’s LightHouse® distribution monitoring platform, consisting of Medium Voltage (MV) Smart Grid Sensors and Sensor Management Software (SMS) with Predictive Gridâ„  Analytics. The LightHouse solution augments ELO’s existing product portfolio to provide an end-to-end solution that provides visibility to better pinpoint faults and outages that extend from the meter to the substation. iControl Networks, a connected home technology and innovation company, and EcoFactor, a provider of cloud-based home energy services, are partnering to deliver a smart energy service that integrates energy devices and appliances with data analytics about HVAC energy usage on iControl's open, device-agnostic platform. EcoFactor will be joining the iControl OpenHomeâ„¢ Partner Program to offer a big data and predictive analytics service layer that allows service providers to deliver the highest energy control and savings to their consumers. RoseWater Energy Group, a company offering next-generation energy storage products, will partner with Ontario-based energy distribution company PowerStream for an initial phase of field trials to measure residential energy storage needs. With RoseWater Energy Group’s Residential Energy Storage Hub, the trials will enable PowerStream to specifically evaluate the effectiveness and benefits of widely distributed energy storage systems for the energy company and its customers. Additionally, because the RoseWater Energy Residential Energy Storage Hub has the capability to maximize all of the benefits of renewable energy sources and condition all incoming power supplies for maximum output, the trials will allow PowerStream to test the performance of renewable energy during peak power periods.
