Wake Electric completes transformer testing using smart grid as a service app

Wake Electric Membership Cooperative has completed its pilot testing of Verdeeco's Grid as a Service transformer analysis application.

The application aggregates and cross-analyzes data from the distribution system to deliver actionable results. For example, when an internal utility report flagged 20 of Wake Electric's distribution transformers for immediate replacement, the Verdeeco application accurately reported that more than 75 percent of them were being appropriately utilized and did not need replacing, saving Wake Electric time, money and frustration.

Integrating the Verdeeco application can be compared to downloading a smartphone app.

"The groundbreaking thing about Verdeeco is its ability -- through cloud-based, focused applications -- to effectively circumvent costly and time-consuming systems integration work," said Don Bowman, Wake Electric's engineering manager. "Verdeeco's cloud-based Grid as a Service platform allows us to hand-select any combination of apps we want and then pull all the data into one easily-understood dashboard."

As a result of its success, the application will be put to use across Wake Electric's seven-country service area near Raleigh, N.C.
