Quick Take: Electric power utilities already have plenty of efficiency mandates to cope with. Now two U.S. Senators (with support from prominent industry officials as you will read below) are calling for $200 million to boost energy efficiency at the state level.

If it passes, some of the money may show up as grants or research programs. That's a positive, but it is also likely to tempt state regulators to stack on more mandates. - By Jesse Berst

Energy Leaders Support Efficiency Legislation

Leaders of energy efficiency have called to action on "State Energy Race to the Top Initiative" sponsored by Sens. Mark Warner (D-Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va). Alliance to Save Energy President Kateri Callahan along with 14 Alliance Commission supporters have signed a letter addressed to Alliance Chairman, Honorable Sen. Ron Wyden and Honorable Sen. Lisa Murkowski, asking for their support of S. 761.
