Trilliant UK deal hints at a very different smart grid future
By Jesse Berst
Quick Take: At first glance, Trilliant's press release today (see Page 2 of this article) is just another announcement about future prepay capabilities. But look in more detail and you'll realize that it holds hints about where the UK market is going next. It may even portend a radically different approach to electric power for other regions, including North America.
Trilliant and British Gas Extend Smart Meter Partnership
Windsor, UK – 10th April 2013 –Today, global smart energy communications leader Trilliant announced that its partnership in smart metering with British Gas has been extended for the Foundation phase of the UK rollout and that the two companies are now working together on developing pre-payment capability. Trilliant supplies the smart metering communications system to British Gas, including the communications hubs and Trilliant’s UnitySuite Head-end software for management of the smart metering business processes and communications service. The UK government has mandated a rollout of smart meters to all consumers in the UK by 2019, and this rollout is estimated to create £14bn in net benefits to the UK in consumer energy savings and lower energy generation demand, according to the Oxford Economics report, The Value of Smart Metering to Great Britain.
During the past four years, Trilliant and British Gas have worked together to extend Trilliant’s proven communications platform to the unique requirements of the UK, and have developed the appropriate standards to ensure the deployment of a system based on open standards. The validation of this solution has led to British Gas and Trilliant reiterating their partnership commitment for the Foundation stage, both continuing to lead the industry in the roll-out of Smart Meters. The next phase of the deployment will see Trilliant and British Gas introduce pre-payment functionality and continue expansion across the country.
Stuart Rolland, Managing Director, Smart Metering, British Gas said: “British Gas is leading the way to provide the benefits of smart meters to our customers. We are pleased to extend our partnership with Trilliant for the Foundation phase of the UK rollout. British Gas, Trilliant and our other partners have worked closely to build the right technical solution for our customers. We are committed to bringing this standards-based solution to the broader UK market supporting a smooth transition from the current rollout to the UK-wide mandated rollout.â€
Andy White, CEO, Trilliant said: “Trilliant has spent the past four years building a critical component of British Gas’s smart meter rollout. We are delighted that this has been such a success and that British Gas has the trust in us to deliver on a much larger scale. We will continue to invest to lead the way for the smart meter rollout in the UK.â€
