PROJECTS AND DEVELOPMENTS
Australian energy distribution company SP AusNet has selected Ericsson to develop and implement a 3G network-enabled communications solution to support its smart meter program. SP AusNet is expanding its existing smart meter network with an Ericsson solution that uses public 3G mobile networks. It will reach an additional 108,000 meters in outer urban and rural areas. ABB has snagged an order to supply 54 ultra-efficient 10 kilovolt (kV) dry-type transformers for an R&D and data storage center in Tianjin, China. The owner of the center, Tencent, is one of the country`s largest internet service providers and is expanding its cloud computing and R&D capabilities. Read more >>
Two Northeast Utilities electric subsidiaries have finished the $718 million Greater Springfield Reliability Project transmission line, on-time and under budget. Connecticut Light & Power and Western Massachusetts Electric upgraded 39 miles of transmission lines between Bloomfield, Conn. and Ludlow, Mass. with more than 600 new structures, 13 new or rebuilt substations and switching stations. Alstom Grid has been awarded a turnkey contract by Saudi Electricity Company to supply Flexible AC transmission systems to the Quwayyah substation in Saudi Arabia. Alstomâ€™s Static VAr Compensator (SVC) will be supplied by Alstom Gridâ€™s Tampere unit. It will improve power quality across the utilityâ€™s AC network. The SVC is part of a project with a total value of roughly $40 million for Alstom Grid. Read more >>
PowerStream is providing a glimpse of how energy consumers may be able to go off the grid in the future with a microgrid demonstration project the utility is operating at its head office. PowerStream is using the demonstration project to evaluate microgrid performance when it is connected to and disconnected from the provincial grid. Read more >>
