On the heels of Cisco's aggressive move to create a smart grid communications platform, here comes GE with an offering that uses identical buzzwords, including "end-to-end," "IP-based" and "industrial-grade." Like Cisco, Trilliant, Silver Spring Networks and others, GE is promoting the idea of a network that can be used for many different applications, including AMI, SCADA and distribution automation.

 

Like more and more of its rivals, GE has gateways to support legacy systems. But unlike virtually anyone else, GE is using WiMax technology at the core.

Designed for ruggedized environments, the Network Communications Platform meets customers’ expanding needs for a single network that can support multiple grid applications. The platform also supports utilities’ critical needs to simplify operations, lower overall operating and capital expenses as well as providing the capability to leverage legacy networks and end devices.
