S&C alliance underscores the quiet revolution in asset management
Quick take: As this announcement demonstrates, we're now at the point where we can remotely monitor all equipment in a substation. Soon we'll be able not just to remotely diagnose problems but even to proactively predict them before they occur. Asset management and maintenance are quietly, steadily undergoing a revolution. - Jesse Berst
S&C Electric and Doble Engineering announced a strategic alliance that gives S&C the ability to monitor all critical equipment in an electrical substation, gathering real-time condition based data using pre-installed or deployed sensors.
With such proactive asset monitoring, S&C says it can identify, communicate and resolve equipment problems before they become disruptive.
"Problems with critical substation assets can result in prolonged outages that impact consumers and large power users such as data centers, manufacturing plants, schools and hospitals. Through our alliance with Doble, S&C is able to provide a total asset management solution for these customers’ substations,” says Wanda Reder, S&C VP for Power Systems Services.

S&C and Doble Establish Strategic Alliance to Broaden
Asset Management Capabilities
Enhanced capabilities help extend life of substation equipment
CHICAGO, July 31, 2012 - S&C Electric Company and Doble Engineering Company today announced a strategic alliance to expand S&C’s existing asset management capabilities. S&C, a global leader in smart grid solutions and renewable energy integration, can now monitor all critical equipment in an electrical substation through its work with Doble, a global leader in diagnostic instruments and consulting services for the energy sector.
Proactive asset monitoring can help identify equipment issues early and thus extend the life of customers’ power equipment. This alliance allows S&C to provide secure cloud-based monitoring for a variety of critical substation assets, including power transformers and circuit breakers and S&C’s IntelliTeam® solutions. Using Doble’s Asset Risk Management System, dobleARMSTM, S&C can gather real-time condition based data on substation equipment using pre-installed or deployed sensors.
"dobleARMSTM goes beyond condition-based maintenance by providing real-time event notifications built around a sophisticated suite of analytical tools that integrate and interpret power equipment data,” says Donald Angell, Vice President of Strategy and Solutions at Doble Engineering Company. "Similar to a car’s ‘check engine’ light coming on, our system will notify S&C of specific issues with critical power equipment so that they can respond to concerns and fix any problems.”
Leveraging Doble’s Asset Risk Management System, S&C can identify, communicate and resolve equipment problems before they become disruptive. The interface enables S&C’s technical experts to proactively monitor equipment 24 hours a day from S&C’s Global Support & Monitoring Center and to provide solutions and field services to resolve equipment issues.
"Problems with critical substation assets can result in prolonged outages that impact consumers and large power users such as data centers, manufacturing plants, schools and hospitals. Through our alliance with Doble, S&C is able to provide a total asset management solution for these customers’ substations,” says Wanda Reder, S&C Vice Presidentâ€"Power Systems Services.
