New arrivals at the intersection of smart grid and M2M
The announcement from Grid Net that it has entered a strategic partnership with NetComm is another illustration of how the smart grid is overlapping with the machine-to-machine (M2M) sector. (See page 2 for the press release.)
M2M (also known as the "Internet of Things") foresees a world where billions of devices will talk to each other over the Internet. As that world approaches, we need systems to manage the networks and to manage the devices themselves.
Companies from the M2M sector have been moving into the smart grid space, which looks like it will become the first example of M2M at scale. And, as the Grid Net announcement suggests, smart grid companies are expanding into the M2M space.
