MDM helps Ontario ISO keep up with utility transformation

Ontario's Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) has extended its contract with IBM to continue operating one of the largest integrated smart meter transaction systems in the world.

The utilities industry is transforming at a rapid pace and requires smarter infrastructures able to improve the performance and sustainability of energy systems while maintaining customer trust. Insights gained from meter data management and analytics will help consumers make better use of energy and utilities make more informed energy decisions.

Supporting the meter to billing operations of 72 local distribution utilities, the IESO's IBM Meter Data Management and Repository is part of Ontario's $68.5 million Smart Metering Initiative and is expected to process more than 120 million meter reads a day. Driving conservation, the MDM/R enables the billing of Time-of-Use rates, a program which encourages consumers to shift more of their energy use to off-peak periods.

The IESO as the Smart Metering Entity is responsible for the administration and operation of the Meter Data Management and Repository including the collection, validation, estimation and the ability for distributors to edit the meter read data.
