Government issues guidelines for safe move to cloud computing

By: SGN Staff

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has just released a draft guide to cloud computing, and it's looking for public comment on it. The guide explains and defines cloud computing and provides information for IT decision makers considering a move to the cloud. It also addresses relevant issues such as security, interoperability and reliability.

As SGN Chief Analyst Jesse Berst said in a recent commentary, many utilities will be forced to move some of their operations to the cloud - largely because they won't be able to afford the equipment and network administrators needed to accommodate the impact the smart grid will have on information technology.
