Distribution management systems: Maui takes on yet another smart grid demo

By: SGN Staff

We reported in November that Maui was becoming a smart grid test bed because of the swarm of companies conducting demonstration projects there. As of Wednesday, add Alstom Grid to the list.

The company will provide its e-terradistribution Integrated Distribution Management System (IDMS) for Maui Electric Company's (MECO) ongoing smart grid demonstration project.

The demo project will assess how smart grid technologies can help the utility cut peak demand, improve service quality, help customers make informed energy use decisions and integrate its growing renewable energy resources. Some of the technologies to be tested include advanced metering, home area networks and battery storage. The Alstom IDMS suite of smart distribution applications will bring together information from the smart grid network to enhance monitoring and control of the utility's distribution system and distributed energy resources.
