Coalition driving sustainable energy push

A new organization has launched with the mission of educating consumers about the staggering numbers surrounding power consumption.

Power Over Energy, a collaboration among industry stakeholders, directs consumers to an energy-efficiency website that provides the tools for users to understand more about how power is generates, transmitted, consumed and conserved.

The website provides the information consumers need to help move the country to a cleaner, more efficient, resilient and sustainable energy future, including some impactful statistics. For example, consumers may be unaware of this information from the EPA: In the United States, 40 percent of the electricity used to power home electronics is consumed while they are turned off, and the total electricity consumed by idle electronics equals the annual output of 12 power plants.

Coalition members include Edison Foundation's Institute of Innovation, Electricity, Efficiency; Environmental Defense Fund; Global Green; GridWise Alliance; Silicon Valley Leadership Group; Silver Spring Networks; Smart Grid Consumer Collaborative; and Sustainable Silicon Valley.
