Breakthrough! The best tool yet for smart grid standards

I've been a standards harpie over the years, yammering on to convince utilities that standards are in their best interest. But you have to be careful what you wish for, since we now have hundreds of standards from various organizations that touch on one aspect or another of the smart grid.
Result: It has become an overwhelming chore to track down every relevant standard. Much less to understand which ones apply in which circumstances. Much less to find and compare standards from different groups to choose which one to use.
Until now, that is. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has created a free Smart Grid Standards Mapping Tool that makes it far easier to discover and choose between standards. Using either a diagram or a list, you can drill down to a specific aspect, then see a list of all the standards that relate. The IEC lists not just its own standards, but those from other organizations as well.
The development effort was led by Richard Schomberg, VP Smart Energy Standardization at EDF and the Chairman of the IEC's Smart Grid Strategic Group. And what an effort it was -- the map was vetted by 17 National Committees from the Strategic Group, representing the interests of the IEC's 82 National Committees and 83 Affiliate countries. It is compatible with the regional efforts of NIST-SGIP, European mandates and Asian frameworks.
