Alabama Power "doubling down on wind"

The American Wind Energy Association has bestowed Southern Company subsidiary Alabama Power with its "Outstanding Commercial Achievement Award" for helping to bring cost-effective wind power to the Southeast.

"Alabama Power is doubling down on wind," John Kelley, Alabama Power's director of forecasting and resource planning, said when he accepted the award.

Alabama Power made its first wind power purchase last year. Including another recent deal, the company's energy mix is now up to 404 MW of wind. Under the contracts, Alabama Power has the flexibility to use the wind energy to serve customers and retire the associated renewable energy credits, or sell the energy and renewable energy credits to others, separately or bundled together.

The utility shares the award with the Kansas-based company from which it purchased its wind power, TradeWind Energy.
