Communications company Sprint Nextel has announced its intention to add Smart Grid solutions and technologies to its portfolio of products and services. In a recent press release, the company stated its objective to provide “telecommunications products, competitive data services, secure IT solutions, and strong partnership” to utilities seeking to modernize and automate the U.S. grid. The company is supporting electric customers with various Smart Grid initiatives, including AMI, SCADA, DR, DMS, and M2M applications.
Quick Take: Sprint is finally joining other major telecoms in staking out their role in Smart Grid development and deployment. Although Paget Alves, President of Sprint’s Business Markets Group, says the company has been
supporting utility automation for years, this appears to be the first time they have publicly advertised themselves as a Smart Grid company.
