It's that time again -- time for SGN readers to nominate smart grid companies you
think will be setting the pace in 2012. We're looking for rising stars with the potential to be 2012's breakout companies. So dig out the tarot cards, make an appointment with your local psychic or -- better yet -- call on your industry knowledge to suggest which companies we'll be hearing about in the year ahead.
All you have to do to nominate a company for the SGN 12 is enter it in the Talk Back form below or send an email to nominations@smartgridnews.com. Be sure to include the name of the company and a brief, 2-3 sentence explanation of why you think it will be a 2012 smart grid superstar. (If you don't give us the "why" your nomination can't be considered.)
Please think about the whole package when you nominate companies. For instance, they may have great technology or stellar leadership, but do they also have the financial wherewithal? (We mention that because one of our 2010 winners – Beacon Power – declared bankruptcy this year.)
How it works:We'll take your nominations through midnight on Jan. 6, 2012. Once they are in, our team will review them and do a preliminary sort. We'll post summaries of the companies that made the cut, and then you'll have an opportunity to vote on the 12 Companies to Watch in 2012.
Our SGN 11 revisited
How did the companies that were voted watch-worthy for 2011 fare? Below are quick updates:
Augusta Systems – Augusta Systems was acquired last August by Huntsville, Alabama-based Intergraph Corp. Augusta Systems is perhaps best known for its EdgeFrontier middleware that enables integration and normalization of data from diverse sources, including sensors, wireless sensor networks and radio-frequency identification systems. Intergraph said the acquisition broadens the reach of its software platforms.
BuildingIQ– In April, the energy management company with offices in Sydney, Australia and San Mateo, California released FaultIQ, the latest addition to its building energy optimization apps. In August, Building IQ received a $1.2 million grant from Commercialisation Australia to reduce building energy consumption. A month later, the company's patent-pending Predictive Energy Optimization software was awarded the EcoGen 2011 Award for Most Outstanding Clean Energy Technology Innovation.
Calico Energy – In April Calico, which provides unified operations centers, announced it received strategic growth capital from Point B Capital and engaged the services of Point B, a management consulting firm that specializes in strategic execution. Just recently, SGN wrote about Calico's Unified Operations Center (UOC) that was announced in October. The UOC allows utilities to connect data, devices, software engines and applications to enable intelligent decision making and control.
Pay as you go electric metering will be huge (20% of all cell are prepaid) - PayGo Electric has downloadable firmware over the air which can add prepay functionality to the smart meter. Prepay is done in a distributed model in near real time vs. next day through back office systems.
We have been looking for that killer "app" to load onto the smart meter with all its additional memory, functionality and the ability to upgrade firmware "over the air". Most of the major smart meter vendors are now integrated to PayGo - which can be also loaded at the factory prior to shipment.
One major IOU has already selected PayGo for it prepay program as have several smaller utilities.

UtiliWorks
UtiliWorks Consulting
UtiliWorks has helped us systematically; analyze where we are, want to be and how to get there. They have the ability and skill set to get to the main issues regarding AMI and make the business case to get the project approved.

Nexgrid
I recently read some great information about Nexgrid in a recent article by the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce. Having worked in the energy industry in Charlotte for many years, I am very interested in this space.
These guys are clearly one to watch based on how quickly they're making an impact in the industry. Their ability to beat out much larger competitors is going to make them the big boy on the block in a short timeframe.
When asked why I think they've achieved such meteoric growth, I think it's due to two key reasons. 1) They're the only player I'm aware of delivering a 100% standards based solution. 2) They've got some real heavy hitters on their board. Industry expertise, serial entrepreneurs, and even an E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year.
These guys are definitely one to watch in 2012!

Siemens AG
With its Smart Grid devision in the newly established Infrastructure & Cities sector, Siemens is expected to make a real boom in the Smart Grid market in 2012. The division provides complete range of products, solutions and services for protection, automation, planning, control, monitoring and diagnostics of grid infrastructure. Software and end-to-end solutions from Enterprise IT up to Smart Metering are supported as well.

Nexgrid
Watch out for Nexgrid! These guys are on track for great things. They are truly innovative with their ecoNet, 100% standards based and broadband.
But the real proof they are leading the pack is how well they serve their customers. The ROI is outstanding. See an article by the Charlotte Chamberhttp://charlottechamber.com/emerging-industry/charlotte-s-dynamic-energy-sector/ for the details:

The Structure Group - Large System Integrators
I nominate Houston based “The Structure Group” as one of the large System Integrators for Smart Grid projects to keenly watch in 2012. Starting with their association with the award winning Oklahoma Gas & Electric Positive Energy project in 2009 which is one of the most comprehensive and successful Smart Grid implementations in entire Americas. The Structure Group has since bagged several Distribution Automation pilots, DR and DMS implementations within US. The next five years in US, will witness a steep increase in DMS implementations which pulls together all the bit and pieces from DA, AMI, DR, SCADA and Renewables pilots. DMS is the brain behind Smart Grid technology and there are only handful of worldwide vendors who offer a complete and total comprehensive solution to roll out a full fledged GIS based DMS. Structure Group is working closely with these DMS vendors to implement Smart Grid at various sites in US.
V Rajsekar - 12/28/2011 - 07:32
Open Access Technology International
I nominate Open Access Technology International as a firm to watch this year. This year they will begin the first implementations of automated system dispatch and distribution management based on costs and forward markets with consideration for transmission and distribution constraints, with such control signals intergrated with power plant distributed management systems as well as demand management systems. The system will also assure that the system has sufficient regulate up or regulate down controlable capacity across each hour.
Fredric Fletcher - 12/28/2011 - 08:32
Power Analytics - Smart Grid Power Management System
Power Analytics software suite is nominated based on the unique patented features that provide real-time monitoring of energy production, distribution and usage throughout the local grid. This SmartGrid “virtualization” capability is brought to any utility-scale electrical network by leveraging years of experience in megawatt-class data centers and mission critical facilities – facilities that are functional “micro grids.” The software suite readily enables safe islanding and provides the basis for price-based electricity trading and arbitrage.
Real-time energy management compares as-designed to as-performing electrical network by using as-designed data vs. actual power performance to predict when and where power problems may occur
A significant feature allows “what-if” scenarios prior to changes that can identify system. optimization opportunities to improve energy system reliability and to manage power consumption.

vivint. Inc
I think vivint. Is definitely someone to watch in 2012. Vivint is currently one of the largest home automation companies in the nation and also one of the fast growing companies in the nation. They also do smart grid technology and have some great things going for them. They currently have over a 650 million dollar credit line with Goldman Sachs (you talk about financial stability) their call center has received 2 JD Power Customer service awards, and the call center is also available 24/7/365. They have a 12 hour response time for repairs etc. They have a 10,000 sq. foot training facility. I think vivint. Is absolutely a company to watch not only in smart grid, but also in home automation and solar markets. Keep up the great work vivint.

Vivint no experience but hopeful investors
Vivint is a company that the Marketing Dept sent a mass email to all of its two thousand employees telling them to vote on this site and the statistics they made up to go with it. You will notice all the nominations for them mention the same things. None of their upper, mid, management has any experience in the field. I think that if you can be successful by throwing lots of money everywhere with no thought behind it. Then Vivint should do extremely well as they started out as a bug extermination company and this has given them the business model of a cockroach : survival at all costs. This is a rare trait to boldly go where you don't know where or what there is. I love their tenacity, great company. I work in the I.T. dept and am privy to numerous conversations and emails and the fact that they are still around should give anyone pause before writting them off as another company trying to get rich at the expense of others. So two thumbs up Vivint. By the way, all the other comments posted by Vivint employees are sales messages promoting their alarm company, just curious why they are allowed. Anyway, keep your eye on them and Vivint keep up the great work.

@David Petersen
David, I looked you up in the vivint directory, couldn't find ya. "Made Up" stats?! Do they not have a 10,000 square foot training facility for smart grid? Do they not have award winning customer service available 24/7/365? Did you know they hired a president and VP's just for smart grid that have tons of experience in the field?! The business model of a cockroach? I guess that's why they have a 690 million dollar credit line with Goldman Sachs, and US Bank just invested anothe 75 million for their solar and smart grid, because investment companies invest that kind of money in businesses that have terrible business models. They feed their employees lunch and or dinner for FREE everyday (1 meal ticket for every 8 hours worked) they built a gym next door so you can workout and stay healthy for FREE, they have a doctors office in the gym with a full time doctor so that if you as an employee get sick (or family) you can see their doctor FREE. I think your crazy to not think vivint. Is a company to watch in the smart grid industry for 2012. Especially if you work there.... But again I looked you up in the directory....and couldn't find ya!

vivint.
This is a company with true vision and motivation towards building a better and more efficient life style. It doesn't matter what part of the company you talk about, their focus is one and the same. As far as the scripted nominations, yes David Peterson III they were sent to us, but these are not "made up" statistics, and we were not told to quote the email. They were pointers to help us point out why we are a leader. This company invests time, employee ideas, and a lot of money into research and development. They do offer 365/24/7 service, a hude training facility and are pushing to put ingenuity and streamlining into self managing energy usage in homes and businesses. Vivint is a technology leader that will leave other companies wondering "what happened?"

Tangent Energy Solutions
My nomination is Tangent Energy – an energy solutions company combining on-site, clean assets with peak demand intervention technology to lower energy costs while alleviating grid congestion.
I think they’ll be a company to watch as they have a superstar board that includes former FERC Commissioner Nora Mead Brownell; strong financial backing (EnerTech and Capital Dynamics); and an experienced management team, led by Dean Musser, that pioneered Economic Demand Response. Dean also built the largest DR company in PJM's territory, before selling to Comverge.
As FERC 745 takes effect in 2012, look for Tangent to become a huge player in EDR while providing other innovative, customer-side smart-grid solutions.

Nomination for 2012: Comverge Inc.
Watch Comverge Create the First Ever Demand Response Market in Africa
Eskom, the largest electricity provider in Africa, selected Comverge to help manage its complex electricity supply and demand challenges by creating and co-managing Africa’s first open market for demand response resources.
South Africa is undergoing significant energy supply challenges due to ongoing demand side growth. Earlier this year, ; Eskom announced it could experience a supply shortage in the range of 1000 to 2000MW beginning in mid-December. While Eskom has initiated several supply side projects in effort to meet this challenge, they realize that with such a gap in supply and demand must also include demand side programs such as demand response.
Under the $27 million agreement, which is one of the company’s largest contracts to date, Comverge will deploy the IntelliSOURCE 2.0 platform for Eskom to register, dispatch and manage a newly established demand response market in South Africa. Under this initial agreement, Comverge will aggregate 500 MWs of load under the IntelliSOURCE system. In addition, Comverge will also bring at least 100 MWs of DR services to the market, serving as the curtailment service provider for this portion. If successful, the project will serve as a blueprint to implement demand response programs in other regions, such as Asia and the Middle East.

Alstom Grid
Alstom is definitely a smart grid player to keep an eye on: financially strong and aggressively pursuing this space globally with internal R&D and external acquisitions. This past year, Alstom extended their ‘King of the Control Room’ with 2 strategic acquisitions: UISOL and Psymetrix.
UISOL's DRBizNet system is the clear choice for addressing the rapidly changing DR processes and managing a wide range of control technologies across all customer classes. Psymetrix's PhasorPoint system is established industry leader in its ability to provide real time monitoring and analysis of power systems for wide area control and monitoring.
With these investments and Alstom’s existing suite of smart grid solutions, it makes them a company to watch in 2012.

Eneri
Eneri will be in my opinion one of the best picks for smart grid solutions in 2012, both for emerging economies and for the giants, especially in high concentrations of end-users.
Three new demonstration projects caught our attention - a smart grid effort in Albuquerque's business district, a rapid recovery transformer study in Texas and a trial involving low voltage current sensor technologies in the UK. They also got us to thinking: At this stage in the smart grid build out, if you could design a demonstration project, what would it entail? That's our latest Tuesday Topic; click for the details.
