IBM and Cisco are teaming up with Dutch utility Nuon for a Smart Grid pilot project in Amsterdam. Called Amsterdam Smart City, the project involves installing smart meters in 500 homes as well as tools to let consumers manage their energy use.  IBM will furnish the software and Web solutions for the product, with Cisco supplying IP-based technology for real-time secure connections between appliances and the utility.

Quick Take: Europe is perhaps a year away from becoming a smart metering hotbed. Italy and Sweden are already at 95% smart meter penetration, while France and the UK have passed legislation to get national rollouts under way.
