Administrative bodies in Brazil have given the green light to Landis+Gyr to begin installing the first of what will eventually be 200,000 smart meters in that country. The approval comes after a two-year certification process from Inmetro, the National Institute of Metrology, Standardization and Industrial Quality. Landis+Gyr plans to install its SGP+M System, which provides a two-way communication between customer meters and utility back-end systems.
Quick Take: Most attention surrounding AMI has been focused on U.S., but the European markets are opening up quickly, with Asia and Latin America not far behind. Companies such as Landis+Gyr and Echelon have spent years in those markets, giving them a leg up.
