Smart Grid defined

I'm looking for one or more definitions of Smart Grid. We have our own data-centric view, so this is an exercise in scoping the concept - like the story of the blind men describing an elephant by touching different parts... Can anyone steer me in the right direction? Elevator speeches? Smart Grid for Dummies?
