Posting Rules
Just as a substation needs relays and protective gear, a blog needs simple rules of conduct to prevent comments that could be shocking, inflammatory or profane. So please:
1. Don't be a jerk.
2. Don't be curser. The English language is vast and magnificent.
3. Don't be a sniper. Please don't attack people personally even if you think they are stupid. (Especially if you think they are stupid).
4. Don't be a troll (someone who makes outrageous statements purely to derail discussion). You know who you are.
5. Don't be a spammer. No spam, no solicitations, no links to porn.
6. Seriously, don't be a jerk.
These posting rules are entirely unnecessary to our regular audience, which is composed 100% of intelligent, well-spoken, tolerant people. However, should an outsider violate one of these rules, you may report it to editor@smartgridnews.com
Please note: That the IP address of where the message is posted from is recorded to track violators.
Getting Start on Smart Grid
Hello everyone, Smart Grid sounds like a really good vision and it's something that all of the utility companies need to be doing. I will be involve in this project for my company, but yet, I don't know what are the process to do so. We will have AMI install soon...and down the road..of course we will install smart devices on the poles or on the lines...Is there anyone out there familiar with how to get start on this project, that could share their ideas or experiences with me? Will DOE pay for some of the cost? Thanks

Getting started on Smart Grid
Hi Teresa, Much is going on in the Smart Grid area these days. Check www.themoderngrid.org for some references, consider attending GridWeek in September, and take a look at Title XIII of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 to see what type of incentives will be available.

Where did the words "Smart Grid" originate from?
selcuk esendal - 10/07/2008 - 15:15
Smart Grid origination
The original smart grid concept grew out of Google's foray into better energy systems. I'm pretty sure they coined the phrases "smart grid" and "vehicle to grid" or V2G . http://www.dasolar.com

Smart Grid Origins ...
I think one of the first projects in this space was initiated by The Electricity Innovation Institute (E2I). They released a Request for Proposals (RFP) in 2002 to solicit assistance in designing an open, standards-based system architecture that would enable the energy industry to meet the emerging needs of a digital society. This project was called the Integrated Energy & Communications Systems Architecture (IECSA) project. The project was developed by the Consortium for Electric Infrastructure to Support a Digital Society (CEIDS), a collaborative research initiative of E2I and EPRI.

Puerto Rico Smart Grid
Tony Gonzalez, I have personally spoken with PREPA on how to deploy a smarter grid for the island. With your frequent changes in government, these long-term projects are often difficult to get started. Since SG covers some many aspects of the electric network, starting with projects that show immediate ROI with minimal investments are investigated first. Some of these include operations center upgrades and network monitoring/sensors or SCADA improvements. The toughest place to see a ROI is smart meters and other customer-facing devices...

Efficiency & Smart Grid
What role can smart grid play in encouraging energy efficiency and in what ways might current policy fall short of efficiency goals? Load balancing and peak shaving is great for many reasons, but other than decreasing line loss in some situations, doesn't on its own reduce peoples' consumption. How can smart meters be implemented to most effectively encourage reduced electricity use and greater efficiency?

Will it work (Smart Grid)
Hello The grid in America is a one way grid, from source to home/business. I know that monitoring is being done, but how can a source such as solar generated from a home or business be put back into the grid? Wouldn't that be like a samon tring to swim upstream? If its a case of replacing our entire grid system, wouldn't it be cheaper on maybe looking into Nickola Tesla's Energy transmition without wires. I heard IBM has done this cellphones and labtops. Just a thought.

Power Line Communication and PRIME
I was wondering what role will PLC play in the smart grid network. Will it be primarily for WAN type of communication or is the thought is that it can be used at the node/HAN level. thank you in advance

smart grid funding
Origianlly I thought there was going to be $4.5 billion for smart grid. In the draft of the Funding Opportunity Announcement it looks like there is $615 million in new awards under this announcement. Where did the rest of the money go?

Indian Smart Grid - presentations and more
Hi Naveen, et. al. Can you please share a little more on what you are doing? What are your goals, "clients" etc. Pl. see an India-specific report that may help: http://www.cstep.in/docs/Power_Sector_Report.pdf If anyone wants more info, pl. email infra4structure@yahoo.com. Please note that US designs and details may not be directly applicable in India. The Indian grid is somewhat closer to Europe in terms of taps, trees, and voltage. This is beyond the India-specific challenges of blackouts, theft, etc.

Smart Grid and Data Distribution - Standards?
Hello Everyone, Has anyone heard of a standard for data distribution called DDS (data distribution service)? It would seem to me, the big issue with The Smart Grid is Smarter Data and the ability to make sense of large amounts of data in high volume situations that require filtering and ability for qualities of service. DDS is becoming popular in Defense Systems and would seem like a very good fit for standards based data dissemination/distribution for Smart Grid Applications. If anyone is interested in participating in some SBIR's with the DOE - please contact me bok@prismtechusa.com

Smart Grid is Unclear
I am a utility engineer that has worked in distribution, transmission, substations and generation for 23 years. The electric system is a very static system, meaning that the electrical system does not function efficiently when loads are changing rapidly and when power is interrupted and re diverted by switching. These actions cause numerous problems such as voltage swings, and intermittent outages. Smart Grid is supposed to redirect power where it is needed, and dispatch green energy to those who want it. This seems unlikely on the distribution system and more likely on the transmission system. Mainly because power can flow two ways on the transmission system and only to the user on the distribution system. Current substation relays can locate faults within feet of the occurrence and can alert a dispatcher in minutes. My point of these examples is to show that system occurrences such as these produce very little data when reacting to these problems. When a circuit trips it is either on of off, not much information other than indication is needed. One might point out that a tremendous amount of data will be produced by the smart meter in the homes. But if you think about peoples habits, most people are at work during the day and electric usage is low and level for 8 hrs, until everyone comes home and the load increases. Electric usage is predicable and usually grows 2% A year. Remote meter reading is a good idea for billing, however real time monitoring will reflect the predicable electric usage trends.

Too much power?
A simple queston: how will the smart grid have the ability to recognize if more power is being sent than is being used? Cheers, Rick

ALT: Something to look into
I have been reading up about smart grid technology and I really think ALT's idea is something to look into. They are proposing comprehensive smart grid and high speed rail infrastructure that reaches across the country by means of the interstate. The smart grid is necessary in moving forward with renewable energy possibilities. Let it fuel mass transit as well. With federal funding moving both technologies to the front of conversation, ALT is certainly something we should be looking into if we wish to move forward in the world with innovation.
