1 High-speed energy storage system designer and manufacturer VYCON has reached what it describes as an industry milestone: shipping its 300th flywheel system. The storage systems are used to protect critical computing processes and equipment from potentially damaging and expensive power outages. The company says the energy storage system's dependability and reliability is based on its ability to discharge and recharge extremely quickly. Its fleet of VDC, VDC-XE and REGEN systems has logged a record five million discharge and recharge cycles in extremely demanding power applications. The units, VYCON says, are frequently required to discharge and recharge every two minutes. Also, they can be easily configured to run in parallel without special communications links to provide longer run time and higher power capacity, the company says. "For flywheels, success is determined by not only the number of operating hours, but the discharge and recharge cycles. We believe this is a truer validation of the flywheel's performance as it exercises all functions of the system under real load conditions, not just in a 'ready' mode," said Frank DeLattre, VYCON president.
