We've been saying for a while that grid-scale storage is near the tipping point. Now comes news of a battery-based storage system that is being treated exactly as if it were a power plant, charging or discharging up to 20MW in less than a second to help with regulation in the New York Independent System Operator region. The grid-scale storage system, the first of its kind in the U.S., will provide instantaneous response to grid operator requests for power – which will help level fluctuations in generation and load. The 8 MW storage system is located in Johnson City, New York and uses AES Energy Storage's patented frequency regulation performance algorithm to optimize energy storage technologies in power markets. Last month, AES completed a $17.1 million loan guarantee agreement with DOE to support phase two: adding the remaining 12 MW in emissions-free capacity to the electric grid.
