The growth of Germany's renewable energy industry has stimulated demand for innovative storage technologies to manage the intermittent power supplied by the country's wind and solar sources. Germany has the world's largest photovoltaic energy capacity in the world and it's growing continuously. It also has Europe's largest share of wind energy capacity as of the end of 2009. The country's public/private cooperative energy storage R&D effort is focused on batteries, smart energy management and hydrogen and fuel cells as possible ways to manage the fluctuations in power from renewable energy sources.
Quick Take: This is likely only the beginning of Germany's aggressive renewable energy campaign. The German government expects to see renewables as 35% of the country's electricity portfolio by 2020 and 80% by 2050.
