How About Some Good News? SGIP Reports Progress on Smart Grid Standards

The Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (SGIP), established by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to develop interoperability requirements and standards for Smart Grid systems and devices, has made substantial progress in its standards work in a number of areas. One SGIP committee has released a working draft of its requirements for essential application program interfaces (API) for electronic calendars and schedules this week, and another committee published its guidelines for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI). Representatives from Georgia Power and metering industry leader Itron lauded the work as a significant step toward Smart Grid interoperability and efficiency.

Quick Take: With the proliferation of Smart Grid technologies, the interoperability issue grows in importance. SGIP, a public-private partnership, certainly isn't the only group working on Smart Grid standards as the links below demonstrate — they all deserve credit for the progress they're making.
