Click inside to read why SGN's Jesse Berst is optimistic about this development in the standards world.

Smart grid standards: Two steps back, half-step forward

Smart Grid, Modern Grid, Smart Grid Standards, Smart Grid Technology, AMI, Electric Utilities
NIST's Smart Grid Interoperability Panel has released its first six entries into its new Catalog of Standards. The entries zero in on a variety of issues from Internet Protocol and energy use information to EV charging and smart meter upgrades. Click inside to read why this takes us about a half step forward.

Smart grid standards slowdown puts utilities at risk

Smart Grid, Modern Grid, Smart Grid Deployment, Smart Grid Standards, Policy and Regulation, Electric Utilities,
FERC recently decided not to establish rules for adoption of smart grid interoperability standards, noting that commenters said they were concerned about "cyber security deficiencies and potential unintended consequences from premature adoption of individual standards." Read what SGN Chief Analyst Jesse Berst has to say about the decision – and how and why it could hurt utilities.

Latest revision to Smart Energy 2.0 ready for comment

Smart Grid, smart grid standards, Smart Energy 2.0, ZigBee energy standards
Progress on the Smart Energy 2.0 standard took a small step forward with the release of a new draft document. SGN Chief Analyst Jesse Berst wonders if this much-needed cross-platform standard will finally get the green light – or suffer the fate of past versions.

End of HAN confusion? A converged network that supports all flavors

Google, Smart Grid, Smart Grid Standards, Smart Grid Technology, Home Area Networks, HomePlug Powerline Alliance
The HomePlug Powerline Alliance has high praise for the first standard for hybrid home networks. The organization says the standard would not only give consumers with home area networks increased reliability and flexibility, it also would cut installation and support costs for service providers.

The plug-in module that makes any appliance grid-connected

An interoperability workshop hosted by EPRI last month marked a step forward in the industry effort to connect residential appliances with the smart grid. Find out why.

Why Wi-Fi may finally be ready for the smart grid

Google, Smart Grid, wi fi smart grid, ZigBee smart grid, HAN, HAN standard, smart meter and wi fi
The Wi-Fi Alliance is making a concerted push to play a larger role in the smart grid. Jesse Berst is particularly intrigued by a new development called Wi-Fi Direct - a new offering that connects devices directly without the need for a hotspot. We asked earlier this week if Wi-Fi Direct has the chops to be a ZigBee killer. Now Jesse's back with the rest of the story.

ZigBee's uncertain future: Will it survive?

Jesse Berst recently warned that Google's home automation plans could impinge on ZigBee's goal to become the planet's standard for home area networking. But there's another threat that's even closer – namely, the new Wi-Fi Direct standard. It allows peer-to-peer networking (no need for a standalone router in the middle). Do you think ZigBee will survive these threats?

Will natural gas kill the smart grid?

Natural gas is getting so cheap that it may become cheaper and faster to slap up a gas-fired peaking plant than to implement a complicated demand response or renewable project - two of the biggest drivers of a smart grid. Yikes! Will natural gas alternatives make the smart grid too expensive by comparison? That's this week's Tuesday Topic in our discussion forum. Please join in.
