1 Quick Take: The smart grid standards effort got knocked back at least two paces by FERC's decision not to adopt rules mandating standards. But it did take a small half step forward with today's announcement that six standards had been formally adopted into an important interoperability catalog.
Why only a half step forward? Because the six standards adopted were not of much consequence. They represent either obvious and easy-to-agree on areas – such as Internet Protocol – or quasi-standards with no real impact – such guidelines for assessing other standards. - By Jesse Berst
"These entries in the Catalog of Standards constitute the first items in what will be a useful toolkit for anyone involved in the smart grid – whether they are utilities that generate and distribute power, companies developing new electronic devices or consumers who buy and use them," said George Arnold, national coordinator for Smart Grid Interoperability for the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). "While it will be of interest to regulators, it will primarily be important as a knowledge base for the entire grid community. It will eventually contain hundreds of consensus documents."
The six standards won approval of 90% of SGIP's general membership in voting earlier this month. SGIP, a consensus-based group with over 675 public and private organizations as members, was created by NIST to coordinate smart grid standards development. While it doesn't write the standards, it does evaluate and vote on standards for inclusion in the catalog.
