next five years, but a Pike Research report, Smart Meter Security, says smart meters remain one of the Smart Grid's weakest links. And, it says, solutions to security threats aren't likely to be in place before 2012. The report also contends that many meter vendors haven't shown much interest in taking care of the elephant in the room as long as data remains protected within their own domains — despite the fact that security solutions offer up a significant business opportunity.

 

Quick Take: Our experts and others have said it several times before: Smart Grid security demands a level of national leadership and coordination in all areas (including R&D ) that's just not happening. And judging from the diversity of opinion on what and where the threat level actually is, we just don't have a handle on it yet.
