1 International open standards consortium OASIS, already involved in a number of smart grid standards projects, is taking on privacy and security policy integration challenges, too. Its Privacy Management Reference Model (PMRM) Technical Committee will propose an open standards framework that will define how to integrate "privacy by design" into networked applications for the smart grid, as well as for health care, finance and other industries. "The OASIS Policy Management Reference Model is a long-awaited tool for assessing the comparability of various online privacy protection policies and practices. Not a policy itself but rather a tool, the PMRM will find broad uptake in e-commerce and e-gov implementations," said Dr. Peter Alterman, senior advisor to the CIO, U.S. National Institutes of Health. John Sabo of CA Technologies, co-chair of the PMRM committee, said most privacy and security policies zero in on fair information practices and principles but give little help to IT professionals who build the systems that support implementation. PMRM will give them a template for developing solutions to privacy issues which also will act as a model for ensuring that privacy controls are in place where they're needed.
As we've said earlier, OASIS seems to have the right combination of players on board, including participants from other smart grid standards organizations.
