Smart grid security alert: Singapore scientists find gaps in NIST standards

Smart grid, smart grid security, cybersecurity, National Institute of Standards and Technology, NIST
NIST has developed a set of cybersecurity guidelines, but two scientists found that there are gaps hackers could take advantage of. They made the discovery by applying the standard to an electric vehicle charging scenario. Click inside for details.

Should you be training your own hackers?

Smart grid, smart grid technology, smart grid security, cyberterrorism, cybersecurity strategies, electric utilities
It's certainly an interesting application of a not entirely new concept: training "counter-hackers" to not only keep cybercriminals out but to make it so expensive and painful they may not try it again. The University of Charleston is training National Guardsmen to do just that, and big corporations are hiring their own counter-hackers. Are we at the point where larger electric utilities will need to follow suit?

Microgrids focus on security, creating needs for UPS storage

Smart grid, smart grid technology, microgrids, energy storage, smart grid security
The primary purpose of microgrids is to provide increased security rather than reduced electricity costs or fuel emissions, according to discussions at a recent microgrid conference. Lux Research senior analyst Steve Minnihan hits the highlights of that re-evaluation of the microgrid business case and the integration of energy storage.

Utilities to FERC: We don't need your security measures, but thanks

Smart grid, smart grid security, cybersecurity, cyberattacks, electric utilities, smart grid strategy
Considering the widespread news coverage, including our own, on the increasing number of cyberattacks against electric utilities, survey results that show few are taking measures to defend themselves against the Stuxnet virus are mystifying. Get the details inside.
