Smart Grid Standards: IEEE Fast-Tracks Power Systems Communications Standard By SGN Staff Jun 29, 2010 - 2:32:41 PM
. The IEEE Standards Association has ratified its IEEE 1815 Distributed Network Protocol (DNP3) standard for electric power system communications, which is considered to be an adaptable basis for better device interoperability and security in information gathering, exchange and use, specifically in supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. The organization also released a draft standard, IEEE P1547.8, designed to provide a common technical platform for distributed resources interconnection applications. Such a standard is considered critical as utilities build and expand distributed resource networks to accommodate renewable energy sources. The DNP3 standard was fast-tracked by IEEE and delivered in seven months. It's scheduled for final publication in July.
