SoCal Edison Milestone: One Million Smart Meters Installed By SGN Staff Jul 12, 2010 - 1:36:14 PM
. Southern California Edison (SCE) on Monday installed its one millionth smart meter at a customer's home in Redondo Beach. The advanced digital meters manufactured by Itron will allow customers to keep tabs on their energy use and manage consumption when the advanced meter features are activated in the near future. The initial deployments are part of SCE's Edison SmartConnect program, which is expected to see five million meters installed for residential and small business customers by the end of 2012. Utility officials estimate that the $1.6 billion meter program will result in reduced demand to the tune of 1,000 megawatts, the equivalent of the electricity produced by an average power plant. "We look forward to making available to all of our customers the valuable features smart meters provide, enabling them to closely monitor and manage their electricity usage to help them save energy, money and the environment," said Theodore F. Craver, Jr., chairman, president and CEO of Edison International, SCE's parent company.
Quick Take: In light of the backlash some smart meter deployments have suffered, SCE's fast-tracked SmartConnect program offers some encouragement.
