Siemens brings a ‘holistic’ solution to market for smart metering

Siemens announced what it describes as a "holistic smart metering solution" intended to help utilities more efficiently set up smart grids and meet future needs, such as accommodating more and more power from renewable energy sources. The solution blends an AMIS automated metering and information system with an Energy IP metering management system. Key features and capabilities include remote reading and management of all meters in a supply area and recording network parameters such as over- and under-voltage and short- and long-term failures. The Siemens technology also can replace existing ripple control systems. The company says its solution modules support network-wide automation. Siemens announced its offering during the Metering Europe conference in Vienna.

Quick Take: Call them holistic, comprehensive, all-inclusive or whatever you want, but the new crop of one-stop shopping solutions for the smart grid could succeed mergers and acquisitions as the next big trend.
