Arizona’s Salt River Project Agricultural Improvement and Power District (SRP), the country's third largest public power utility, is ordering an additional 500,000 Elster EnergyAxis® smart meters which will bring its total advanced metering deployment to one million. The additional meters will be delivered over the next three years. This latest smart meter deployment project is partially funded by a $56.9 million matching DOE Smart Grid Investment Grant. SRP says it has seen a 20% increase in voluntary time-of-use (TOU) rate participation programs with its smart meter installations. Elster is one of the world's biggest electricity, gas and water measurement and control providers.
Quick Take: It is interesting to see public power utilities such as Salt River, SMUD and Austin Energy taking a leadership role in the Smart Grid.
