1 Quick Take: The study described below will be a relief to meter makers, who were recently sucker punched by a pseudo-scientific report claiming that meters emit dangerous radiation. In fact, says this study, they produce only a fraction of the RF radiation emitted by cell phones and microwaves. But let's not kid ourselves that this will be enough to end the hysteria. For one thing, there's the matter of getting the word out to skeptical consumers. – Jesse Berst
Radio frequency (RF) emissions from smart meters fall within the FCC standard for safety, according to a report from the California Council on Science and Technology. Smart meters have been the controversial focus of protests, lawsuits and calls to block deployments from consumers concerned about the possible health hazards smart meters could pose. The council report made it very clear RF emission levels from smart meters are much lower than for common household electronics like microwaves and cell phones in terms of thermal (tissue heating) health impacts. It also said little is known about potential health impacts from prolonged or cumulative exposure and recommended continued study, and that the state PUC consider an independent review of smart meter deployments. It also said consumers should be given detailed information on all devices that emit RF, not just smart meters.
