Itron Smart Meters Accurate, According to Independent Tests Requested by Texas PUC

Navigant Consulting LLC said all of the thousands of Itron smart meters it tested are accurate by American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards. The tests were requested by the Public Utility Commission of Texas in response to questions raised by advocacy groups about the accuracy of smart meters. The concern was that the smart meters collected inaccurate data that led to higher than expected electric bills. The announcement coincides with two milestones: Itron has deployed three million smart meters at utilities throughout the country, and Houston's CenterPoint Energy announced the installation of 500,000 of the Itron meters. CenterPoint plans to deploy two million meters throughout its electric service territory by mid-2012.

Quick Take: It's good to see solid validation of Itron's smart meters, but unless utilities ramp up consumer education programs we may see an endless repetition of scenarios like this one.
