Will low-cost Chinese meters eventually force out equipment made in the U.S. and Europe? Earlier this year, we saw China-affiliated Glen Canyon launch an inexpensive smart meter for the North American market. But most analysts predict it will take a few years - at the earliest - for Chinese meters to penetrate the staid and slow-to-change market here.
A more grave threat may be embodied in Monday's announcement (see the press release on page 2) that Chinese giant Huawei is teaming with Landis+Gyr to attack the UK market. Most U.S.-based metering companies have long assumed that Europe would provide their next wave of growth. But European utilities may prove more willing to incorporate Chinese technology. At best, the North American companies will have to slash prices and margins. At worst, they could be priced out altogether.

| Now that the Telco`s are finally seeing the light of day by reducing tariffs and making cellular based metering more viable; it should come as no surprise that L +G teaming up with Huawei and Toshiba was nothing less than a good business. I would think additional comms chip set providers such as Qualcomm will be sharpening their pencils and making similar moves as its all about reducing the cost of goods and Hauwei getting it`s slice of the market. The cost differential of making a meter in China vs in the U.S. or India would not be that great; American branded meters are more expensive because American Companies (yes I know wages are higher) innovate and spend up on R&D where China really does not, at least not from what I have seen. Utilities in the States have cried and demanded metering interoperability knowing this would drive prices down and thus in effect making the meter as a single component a “me to” product. But I don’t think American metering companies have much to worry about; it`s not just about “the meter” it`s the entire package from metering comms to MDMS and all of the analytics that make them the better value. And lets not kid ourselves, do we really think all meters installed in the States are 100% American made? I would seriously doubt it! |
