1 S&C Electric's lithium-ion-based community energy storage system (CES) will be installed at customers' homes in an AEP Ohio test project for the technology. The storage systems will provide CES-equipped customers up to several hours of backup power during outages.
And eMeter, in collaboration with utility CPS Energy, announced that it has successfully integrated its EnergyIP® platform with the CPS SAP IS-U EhP5 system in the first phase of a smart meter pilot. That integration gives CPS customers real-time energy use information and other enhanced metering services.
AEP is one of the first utilities to install the CES devices. The units are provided to customers at no charge, and customers who agree to have a unit on their property also get a $350 incentive. The CES program is part of AEP Ohio's gridSMART® Demonstration Project, established to test new technologies and consumer programs. A total of 80 CES units will be installed by the end of the year.
The eMeter collaboration with CPS is, the companies say, the world's first integration of a Meter Data Usage System (MDUS) and SAP's recently released IS-U EhP5 system. "eMeter's SAP MDUS solution allowed us to integrate eMeter EnergyIP to SAP with virtually no additional customization, dramatically reducing our AMI integration costs. We are now well-poised to give our customers the information they need to manage their energy usage," said Lawanda Pamell, CPS Energy's senior director of Enterprise Application Delivery.
CPS also plans to provide additional services to customers in the future, including time-of-use rate plans and demand response programs. The utility expects to replace all electric meters and retrofit gas meters with smart meters by the end of 2016. CPS is the country's largest municipal utility with a 1.1 million customer service area in San Antonio, Texas.
