The meter data management (MDM) market is expected to take off like a comet: from $54 million in 2009 to $221 million by 2014. That's the forecast in the latest report from GTM Research, The Emergence of Meter Data Management (MDM): A Smart Grid Information Strategy Report. The report identifies the role of MDM in the Smart Grid buildout and smart meter deployments and outlines what it will take for MDM to succeed. It also includes recommendations for the best MDM deployment plans, technology drivers and inhibitors, profiles and rankings of the leading MDM market vendors and an examination of initial obstacles, such as identifying the role of MDM technology and its value to utilities. "Accelerated deployment of smart meters is driving demand for meter data management systems," according to Chet Geschickter, a GTM Smart Grid analyst and author of the report. "MDM creates an opportunity for utilities to build intelligent applications across the enterprise, but they need to adopt modern system designs including service oriented architectures to do this."
Quick Take: In November 2009, Smart Grid News contributor and security expert Jack Danahy issued this blunt assessment of how utilities could respond to the proliferation of smart meter data: "The data surge is coming, and you can either surf it, or be pounded by it. You certainly will not be able to ignore it."
