Data historians defined
Data historians -- also called process historians -- originated as special-purpose repositories for vast quantities of time-series data, such as stock prices over time. Or for measurements from a device over time, which is why many SCADA systems and distributed control systems (DCS) have a historian above the control layer.
Modern versions have been integrated with dashboards and query tools. They've also become capable of collecting data from many heterogeneous systems, and in real time.
A well-known player
OSIsoft is perhaps the best-known historian in the electric power sector. Ann Moore, an OSIsoft business development executive, told me that the company's flagship Pi System is in use by 90% of the ISOs/RTOs in the U.S. The latest version can collect, historize, find, analyze, deliver and visualize time-series data.
OSIsoft also has a close partnership with Microsoft. It has pre-integrated the Pi System with Excel, Sharepoint and SQL 2012. This tight integration allows "self-service business intelligence" using Excel as the front end. OSIsoft clients use it for things such as trend-spotting, key performance indices and statistical analysis.
