.

Grid Net and Oracle will work together to deliver advanced distribution management systems and meter data management technology for utilities involved in Smart Grid deployments. The Smart Grid solutions offered by the two companies are intended to help utilities efficiently and securely distribute power, enhance network reliability, cut the duration of outages and improve customer satisfaction. Company officials said Grid Net's software platforms – PolicyNet SmartGrid Network Management System and Smart Network Operating System – are a great fit for Oracle's mission-critical software applications. "With our relationship, utilities can now more effectively and efficiently implement innovative technologies to enhance and accelerate their Smart Grid deployments," said Andres Carvallo, executive VP and chief strategy officer with Grid Net.

Jesse Berst's take: In our recent overview of Cisco's Smart Grid Strategy, we talked briefly about the convergence of utility (a) operations centers with (b) back office systems, all running on top of (c) a single network management "operating system."

Here is a partnership that takes a step in that direction. It marries Oracle's vaunted back office expertise (b) with Grid Net's network management capabilities (c). So what about (a) – the operations center? Take notice that this release uses the phrase "advanced distribution management." And then remember that Oracle has several impressive operational products in its portfolio. And then ask yourself if this new partnership may someday find itself in direct competition with the operations+back office powerhouse created by ABB's purchase of Ventyx.
