More and more operational technology (OT) equipment comes with an information technology (IT) component, whether embedded software or communications or on-board memory or control software or any of many other variations. For this and other reasons, "traditional" OT vendors have been steadily increasing their IT capabilities. ABB has been most active with its acquisition of Ventyx. But other industrial giants are also on this path, as we see in this week's announcement from Siemens.

 

The deal is a strategic partnership to jointly offer a pre-integrated version of the Utilicase asset management suite to customers. Siemens personnel will use their field and operational knowledge to help install and customize the suite, which provides a near-real-time look at asset health along with predictive analytics.

 

"The goal is not to replace the investment made by utilities recently in enterprise asset management but to leverage the Utilicase EPS-M platform coupled with Siemens asset and operational knowledge to make the existing information actionable and provide critical insight into grid reliability and risk," said Utilicase CEO Spero Mensah.

 

At the beginning of this year, Siemens purchased eMeter, purveyor of meter data management software. The German industrial often invests in or partners with smaller companies as a first step towards an eventual purchase.
