Zigbee, Wi-Fi Alliances Take the Open Road to HANs

Wireless technology innovators Zigbee® Alliance and Wi-Fi Alliance® are joining forces to work on wireless home area networks (HANs) for smart homes. They will initially focus on Smart Energy 2.0, the next-generation energy management protocol which is expected to operate with Wi-Fi technology as the outcome of the collaboration. Quick Take: Ironically, allowing the next-generation ZigBee protocol to run over Wi-Fi as well strengthens ZigBee rather than weakens it. In today's climate, it pays to be as open as possible, as early as possible, even if it means allowing others to play in your HAN sandbox.
