Zigbee Alliance, global promoter and developer of wireless network solutions and specifications in commercial, residential and other applications, has announced the release of its draft 0.7 document for its Smart EnergyTM version 2.0 for download and public comment. Smart Energy has been a leading choice in implementation of AMI and smart metering on home area networks (HAN) since its initial release in mid-2008. The draft's release was accelerated to accommodate the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standards review timeline. The Zigbee standard is an attempt to get the entire Smart Grid community involved in the development of a universal wireless standard. Comments will be accepted until June 4, 2010.
Quick Take: Many of us have been talking about ZigBee as if it were a completely mature specification. In fact, it is still missing some essential definitions, which the committees are racing to complete.
