Smart energy homes are big business and about to get bigger: The global market for home area network (HAN) products and services could reach $3 billion by 2014, according to market research and business intelligence company ON World. The company worked with early adopters on five continents to pull together consumer attitudes toward energy savings, green homes, the most likely energy products and services, pricing, preferred interaction devices, user versus utility control, automation, smart meters and more. Some findings from ON World's survey segment of its Smart Energy Homes report:

·         59% are "interested" or "most interested" in adopting new home energy management technologies

·         81% are willing to pay for energy management equipment if it means they could get up to 30% energy savings

·         Participants were willing to pay an average of $150 on home energy equipment (with significant differences between consumers in the U.S., Britain and Australia)

"Energy is the killer app for the smart home," said Mareca Hatler, ON World's research director. "The home area network has become one of the most exciting developer opportunities in the last few years. Smart grid initiatives have seeded the market and primed the HAN ecosystem for hyper-growth." The report addresses the global market, including five-year forecasts by region, application and product type, an in-depth competitive analysis and technology evaluation, in addition to the consumer survey.

Quick Take: It's been well-established that the home area network market has hit its adolescent growth spurt. Hopefully the established providers and the inevitable newcomers are paying attention to what consumers actually want and — remember smart meters? — that security is part of the equation now and not an afterthought.
