. Some industry observers have questioned if consumers really want smart home energy management devices, despite the abundance of products to choose from. But in Texas, TXU Energy says its customers do want energy efficiency devices and plans to roll out 100,000 of them in homes and businesses by 2012. TXU set the target as it announced a multi-year purchase, installation and service agreement with demand response and advanced metering company Comverge. "It's clear from our early efforts that consumers are actively choosing to adopt these new energy efficiency tools," said TXU CEO Jim Burke. "We believe that's due, in large part, to our ability to make them both functional and affordable." TXU says its TXU Energy iThermostat is the first and only Web-enabled programmable thermostat in the Texas retail electric market that allows consumers to monitor, control remotely and manage their home or business temperature via the Internet. Comverge makes the communications module in the iThermostat and provides the software needed for the remote control function.
Quick Take: TXU Energy has been investing in demand side management and energy efficiency products and services for at least the past few years. And it looks like the utility has been educating its customers about the benefits of those tools along the way.
