A majority of consumers polled in a recent Smart Grid market survey said they would change how they use electricity if it would save them money, although many indicated they would want additional savings if they agreed to sign up for a demand response (DR) program. The Frost & Sullivan survey, Smart Grid Market - A Customer Perspective on Demand Response, also notes "a high probability" that consumers with smart appliances will participate in a demand response program. DR is a key Smart Grid technology because it is expected that it will reduce the need to build peak generation plants and improve power quality and the environment.
Quick Take: Obviously, the news that almost 60% of the consumers surveyed are willing to conserve energy is good but there's some bad news in this Smart Grid market survey too. While consumer awareness of Smart Grids is "moderately high," only a disappointing 16% of the respondents were aware of any efforts by their utilities to implement Smart Grid technology.
