Silver Spring Networks has  two new software applications designed to help utilities with their customer engagement  and  demand response initiatives. The new offerings, UtilityQ® Demand Response Manager™ 1.0 and CustomerIQ™ Web Portal 1.5, work with Silver Spring's IPv6-based Smart Energy Platform to ease the way for utilities to interactively engage customers and manage demand. In this integrated approach, demand response software communicates with in-home devices over the two-way smart grid network in real-time to provide new benefits like simpler implementation of tailored demand response programs and more useful information about energy use and costs for consumers. In addition to the two components mentioned, the Silver Spring package includes device testing and installation and customer service tools

and a customer outreach toolkit for utilities. Silver Spring says its Demand Response Manager allows utilities to cut energy procurement costs and potentially put off building new generation capacity by offering improved load shedding predictability and real-time load management.

Quick Take: Though the world still thinks of SSN as a communications/networking company, the firm has been broadening its ambitions for the past year. In September 2009 it acquired home energy management company Greenbox Technology. Since then, it has added meter data management, outage management and grid applications. And now it is launching demand response software to help utilities with that task. Welcome to the world of co-opetition. SSN will cooperate with companies to run their grid apps on top of its infrastructure. But it is happy to compete with them too.
