OpenADR Alliance. The alliance, which was announced Wednesday, was formed by Honeywell, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Pacific Gas & Electric and SoCal Edison to lobby for the adoption of an automated demand response (Auto-DR) standard — and compliance. Auto-DR encourages businesses and homeowners to cut power use during peak demand or in response to market price changes by automating message delivery from the utility to the customer. Adoption of OpenADR standard would lead to an Auto-DR message format so that dynamic price and reliability signals can be sent in a uniform and interoperable data model by utilities, independent system operators and customer energy management systems. The OpenADR Alliance plans to work with other smart grid groups and stakeholders such as the Smart Grid Interoperability Panel, North American Energy Standards Board, the Wi-Fi Alliance and the Zigbee Alliance to promote the standard. Jeremy Eaton, VP for energy solutions at Honeywell, said widespread adoption of an OpenADR standard will benefit consumers because open standards encourage competition and innovation with the result being more effective smart grid technologies and greater energy and cost savings.
Quick Take: Judging from the muscle in this group, we're giving pretty good odds that it will be able to help move the industry toward adoption of the standard — and its obvious benefits.
