The Demand Response and Smart Grid Coalition (DRSG) briefed the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change this week on why demand response and the smart grid are essential to ensuring that climate policy goals are achieved. DRSG President Dan Delurey said the briefing at the Cancun, Mexico, convention was well-attended and that coalition members were able to work with attendees to help them understand the smart grid and how it can be implemented through demand response. "Our reason for going to the UN climate conference was to make the climate community aware of how smart grid and demand response can help it get to where it wants to go," Delurey said. "We explained how DR and smart grid help in the management of intermittent renewable energy such as wind and solar. We also tried to convey to conference delegates the additional gains in energy efficiency that are possible by empowering consumers with new technologies and new informational feedback about their electricity usage." DRSG companies participating in the briefing were Landis+Gyr, Aclara, Johnson Controls and Ingersoll-Rand.
Quick Take: While the outcome of the convention is uncertain, it's encouraging that the DRSG was able to take the smart grid message directly to the people who are developing climate policy.
